If you have stuff that is still useable, but not valuable enough for ebay or a yard sale, consider freecycle. My husband have given, and gotten, thousands of dollars of perfectly useable stuff this way. When we moved the last time, we also had a lot of stuff to get rid of. We probably gave away or threw away more than what we brought with us. This was a blessing, as even the stuff we brought with us proved to fill the moving truck. Good luck on your moving sale and your move.

AWESOME start! I've moved myself (and after marriage, ourselves) a total of 3 times. If you can manage it, it's certainly the way to go. I'm been MUCH MUCH MUCH more pleased on a number of factors with Budget truck rentals than U-Haul.

    Thanks for the encouragement, everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion, crazyliblady. We will definitely freecycle, list as "free stuff" or donate whatever is unsold and usable in the final month(s) before our move.

Thanks for the advice on Budget, threebeansalad. When it is time to reserve the truck, I'm sure I'll be back on here looking for more suggestions.

good luck with selling your stuff... i do have a small suggestion though... when you're down to tons of smaller household items... kitchen stuff, linens, lamps, etc you might think about selling at a flea market/swap meet if there is one nearby... i've found that there are more people at so chances of finding someone who needs/wants your stuff is higher... price it nice and cheap and it should sell quickly...

Wow! You are a 1/3 of the way there! I just completed a move with the army in October and my movers were amazed at how little we had for living in a home for 9 years with two children. I'm pretty good at getting rid of things. My point is that the less you have, the less stressful the move will be. Best of luck. I look forward to seeing how quickly you can come up with the remaining funds!

Even if you don't make your goal (great start though!), remember that you will be saving money on wear and tear on the truck, gas, your sanity, etc. Your moving strategy was mine for many years - it works, its cheap, & it keeps sentiment at a minimum.
