Buying Home Furninshings

October 20th, 2008 at 02:52 pm

Where have you had most luck buying the best home furnishings? "Best" means the right combination of price and quality ... whatever that may mean to you.

I am starting a list of places to shop for home furnishings (mainly furniture) after our move, and this is what I have so far. What I'm really looking for is alternatives to the "regular" retail stores, tho' I will start there for pricing benchmarks. I am totally receptive to the idea of buying 2nd hand (with some exceptions, such as mattresses).

What am I missing?

Your list looks comprehensive to me! I wish I needed furniture or had money, there have been some really nice antique pieces on Craigslist in our area recently.

Costco? (Worth a look though online the prices don't look great to me).

We've had a lot of luck at an oak warehouse here. With all kinds of furniture. We've bought bed sets for the kids and a couch there - and theater seating - before they went out of business anyway.

I think Craigslist is the best item on your list though. Particularly once you move to SD - when you have so many wealthy people the sales are good. (& you'll also have the foreclosure sales). An abundance of "new" furniture on the used market.

So did your offer go through!? You got the house?

Furniture consignment shops. There's a good one in Encinitas along the 101. Also one with antiques in the Del Mar section of the 101.

I haven't tried this myself, but you might get some unique pieces shopping across the border in Tijuanna...

    Thanks everyone!

momcents - Thanks ... yes, I do think this is a pretty good time to be a buyer for these types of things. I've been toying with the idea of antiques, but I'm no expert, so if I buy any it will be just because I like them and not because I expect the value to rise.

monkeymama - yea, I took one quick peek at Craigslist San Diego and it does look like some good deals are to be had there!

gamecock - No, we haven't actually made any offers yet. We're flying out to SD shortly after Thanksgiving ... I have another temp work assignment coming up, and we thought after that wrapped up would be a good time to go ... plus house sales traditionally hit a "holiday season slump" that we think might work to our advantage. I'm just thinking ahead about furnishings, and since the "feathering the nest" part of home buying is the most fun part it helps balance out the less fun (but very important) part of digging in to the housing market.

zetta - Those are GREAT suggestions! Thank you!

fern - I am saving space for a couple items I know I'll be getting from my mom someday. (One is actually a piece I loaned to her, a little shelving unit hand-carved by my great-grandfather, but I don't have the heart to ask for it back right now as she has found the perfect place for it in her house.)

I bought an accent table from:

I'm not sure that their prices are the lowest but the table was exactly what I needed when we moved and needed some smaller furniture for our smaller home.

It's great that you are planning in advance.

Analise - Thanks! I added it to my list.

And I'll mention for anyone interested (and still reading this old entry) that www.rugs-direct.com is a good place to get rugs, if you feel comfortable buying on-line without being able to see & touch. When we bought our first house, we bought a couple rugs there.
