Black Friday Let Me Down Again

November 29th, 2008 at 07:43 am

I'm in the market for a digital camera (have been looking for a couple months). I checked the Black Friday specials, but the situation was exactly the same as last year when I was looking for a GPS: Yes, there were some fairly decent discounted prices, but the models that were being offered all left something to be desired. The top-rated models that Consumer Reports or other consumers deem to be "best buy" just aren't the ones offered up at steep discount. Once again, I skipped the Black Friday sales. (The digital camera was the only thing I was shopping for.) Call me crazy, but I'd rather spend an extra 30 or 40 bucks and end up with a camer I'll be happy with and get maximum use of ... After all, this is going to be the very first digital camera I have paid for, and I plan on keeping it as long as it functions.

I'm not prepared to write off Black Friday all together ... Next year if I'm in the market for something, I'll check the specials again. But so far my "streak" of finding absolutely nothing worth buying in the Black Friday specials continues.

I just bought a digital camera. I checked out www.consumersearch.com for reviews, then settled on the Canon PowerShot 590 i think it was. Consumersearch said it retails for $160 but i found it for $113 at amazon.com. It's an 8 megapixel, 4x optical zoom, a good upgrade from my 3.2 megapixel, 2x zoom.

Nope...can't call you crazy. If you want something particular and can justify the extra expense based on usability, etc, I say hold out for it. Otherwise, you buy the cheaper one and it isn't really what you want, and you kick yourself over & over. (been there, done that)

P.S. Love the Ann Richards quote.

I did a simple 'Google' and several websites stated that President's weekend sales are the best for buying cameras. They stated that the new ones are released the end of January, so both new and old go on sale. Maybe yhou will want to wait for that. I'm going to check it out myself.

    Thanks very much, recoveringdebtor.
I did go ahead and buy a camera. Not a Black Friday special, just one I was interested in and shopped around for the best deal I could find. We are going on a big househunting trip very soon and I wanted a camera to use on that trip.
