Woohoo! Thank you ThreeBeanSalad, Craigslist and Ebay!

January 27th, 2007 at 08:10 pm

I was going to hold off on posting anything about this until I had my end-of-the-month totals but I'm so excited I just couldn't wait!

The first (and by far the biggest) step in preparing for our relocation is selling off as much of our stuff as we can bear to part with.

Thanks to ThreeBeanSalad's heads-up, I posted some furniture for sale on Ebay when they had a 20-cent listing sale. Out of 7 listings, only 2 sold, but since the listing fee was so minimal I don't mind. The folks who bought one of our sofas came this morning and picked it up. They seemed so happy with it. I think they got a fabulous deal, and we are happy to not have to move it, so it was a win-win for everyone.

Last night I listed the 5 items that did sell on Ebay on Craigslist (www.craigslist.org). It was the first time I ever listed on Craigslist. One item already sold this morning; some nice folks came and took a look and bought it on the spot, for cash. No listing fee, no commissions, just cash in hand. How cool is that?

That is great! I wish I had known about the .20 listing fee. Frown I would have liked to have listed some stuff then.

I caught the Craigslist bug and listed another 3 furniture items this morning, for a total of 8 listings last night & this morning ... The shop has closed for the day, and we sold 3 of the 8 items! On one item, I got 3 Email inquiries within minutes of listing and the couple that bought it beat out the 2nd inquiry by less than one minute. [Lesson Learned: If you are shopping for something on Craigslist and you see what you want at a good price grab it fast! For us thrifty souls, it can be hard to make such a quick buying decision but that's what it takes.]

It was really nice interacting with the people who bought, because obviously if they are buying second hand they are also thrifty souls like us. Two were middle-aged couples who are obviously diehard bargain hunters. Both husbands were so cute, because they both just said to their wives "If you like it dear it is fine with me."

One was a single guy who lives in a small apartment and he was so excited because our little pub table was just the right size for him to use one half as a desk and one half for eating; with his current set-up he either has to move his computer to eat or sit on the floor I guess. As we were heading inside after loading it in to his car, I heard him exclaiming to his doggie passenger, "Yea xxx! We got a nice table!"

It's a rewarding feeling when both sides in a transaction end up happy.

Yup, Craigslist is good for selling furniture. Just watch out for the scammers (or maybe there's just tons of them in my area, boo).
